South Fork’s track and field team competed at the Humboldt Twilight Invitational at Humboldt State University last Friday afternoon. The first event of the season was attended by all Humboldt Del Norte League schools.
Senior shot putter and discus thrower Elizabeth Kubik did very well for South Fork, coming in 5th in each of her events with a 26’4" shot put toss and a 55’5" discus throw. Freshman Fawna Meeks made her throwing debut, coming in 18th with a toss of 15’10" in the shot put and placing 21st with a throw of 33’11" in the discus.
Junior Dustyn Salomon finished second in the mile at 4:54, 6 seconds better than his previous personal record. Senior Ismael Lopez finished 3rd in the mile at 5:00, 3 seconds under his PR. Freshman Jorin Eddy ran his first high school mile for a time of 6:10, placing 15th.
The foursome of freshmen Huston Reuter and Rylie Miller, plus Salomon and Lopez competed in a sprint medley and placed 9th out of 16 entrants.
Salomon place 4th in the high jump at 5’4", a 2-inch improvement over his PR. Miller placed 13th in his first competitive jump at 4’8".
Miller placed 10th in the long jump at 15’7.5". Lopez placed 14th at 14’11" and Eddy placed 20th at 13’2.5"
Lopez, Eddy, Reuter and Salomon ran a distance medley and placed 6th out of ten teams running. Head coach Susan Chadbourne said, "Their hand-offs were great in the relays and they really enjoyed the excitement that comes with running a relay race."
The veterans on the team have established themselves as serious competitors with a strong work ethic in training. Chadbourne expects these good habits to rub off on the rookies and that the benefit of the pre-season meets will be reaped in late March when the league meets begin.
The team will next compete on Saturday in McKinleyville at the Panther Relays. PHOTOS COURTESY OF SUSAN CHADBOURNE
