South Fork’s Varsity boys lost two games last week, falling to Humboldt Del Norte Big Five front-runner Arcata 86-51 at home on Wednesday and then losing a nail-biter to open Little Four Conference play in Hoopa on Friday 65-61 in overtime.

On Wednesday the Cubs were dominated by the Tigers through all four quarters, but managed to play better in the second half, more than doubling their first half tally.

Senior Levi Paine and junior Cristian Alatorre led South Fork’s scoring with 11 points each, including two 3-pointers apiece. Senior Damian Alatorre had 9 points, junior Joey Wittlake had 7, sophomore Troy Langley had 4, and junior Jesus Lopez added three.

On Friday the Cubs traveled to Hoopa Valley, one of the toughest houses in the league and found themselves knotted at 55 after 4 periods. Hoopa pulled away and outscored the Cubs 10-6 in overtime for the win to open league play for both teams.

Cristian Alatorre led the Cubs with 17 points followed by Langley with 12. Lopez had 9, Damian Alatorre had 8, Wittlake had 7, Ismael Lopez had 4 and Andres Alatorre and Paine each had a bucket.

The losses bring the Cubs’ season record to 12-6 over all, 0-1 in HDNL play. This week they face St. Bernard’s on Friday in Eureka, tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
