South Fork’s varsity boys basketball team made the long trek to Oakland last Tuesday and struggled to score against fellow Division 5 school College Prep, falling 48-38.

”We should have been able to put up 50 points,” said head coach Jake Mitchell, “since we held them to just 48.”

Mitchell said the team racked up over 20 turnovers and were called for six traveling violations as the offense was indecisive and struggled to penetrate College Prep’s tough zone defense. “We didn’t move the ball well enough to make their defense work, and we had a poor shooting night on top of that.”

Senior Damian Alatorre was the top South Fork scorer with 13, junior Jesus Lopez had 11, sophomore Troy Langley had 8 and juniors Cristian Alatorre and Joey Wittlake had 3 points apiece.

The loss brings the Cubs to 12-3 on the season. The team will get some time off over the holiday break before hosting Humboldt Del Norte Big Five powerhouse Arcata on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in Miranda.
