South Fork’s varsity boys went 2-1 in local tournament play last weekend hosted jointly by St. Bernard’s and Ferndale, bringing their record to 12-2.

On Thursday night the Cubs dominated Ferndale for a lop-sided 53-34 win. The victory bodes well for Humboldt Del Norte Little Four success for the Cubs who lost close contests to the Wildcats last year.

Senior Damian Alatorre was high scorer for the Cubs with 19, followed by junior Cristian Alatorre with 15, senior Levi Paine with 10, junior Joey Wittlake with 4, junior Jesus Lopez with 3 and sophomore Troy Langley with a bucket.

The Cubs’ opponent on Friday night was Laytonville, a team they’ve already beaten twice this season. In spite of the 68-59 win, head coach Jake Mitchell was not happy with his team’s performance "We were a little over-confident and didn’t really take the game seriously," he said.

Damian Alatorre again led the South Fork attack with 23 points, Cristian Alatorre had 16, Paine had 10, Wittlake had 7 and Lopez and Langley had 6 points apiece.

On Saturday South Fork lost a close high-scoring game to Hoopa Valley 75-70. Mitchell said earlier in the year that the Warriors were likely to be the team to beat in the Humboldt Del Norte Little Four Conference.

Poor free throw shooting and mental errors were the difference in the game according to Mitchell, who will have time to prepare his squad for the rematch to open HDN play on January 4th when he expects to do better.

Cristian Alatorre had 23 points, followed by Damian Alatorre with 16. Jesus Lopez chipped in 9, Paine and Wittlake had 8 apiece and Langley had 6 points.

Although no all-tourney team was named at the event, Mitchell especially liked the contributions the team got from Paine and Cristian Alatorre who, he said, " are really starting to play well for us."

The Cubs will go to Oakland today to play College Prep and then will take a break for the holidays until facing Arcata at home on Wednesday, Jan. 2 in HDN interlock play.
