South Fork’s varsity girls brought home the first place plaque from the Calistoga High School basketball tournament over the weekend and won another pre-season game last Monday to bring their record to an impressive 10-1.

Junior Kassie Humphrey was named tournament MVP in Calistoga as the Lady Cubs won three games over small schools from the southern end of the North Coast Section.

"Kassie does everything well," said head coach Dave Bushnell. "She passes well, scores from both inside and outside, can handle the basketball, and is very good under pressure."

In the opening game South Fork rolled over Lutheran 56-26. "We had a slow 1st quarter, but then got going and outran them for the rest of the game," said Bushnell. "Kayla (Kercher) had a very good game inside."

The junior forward led the team in scoring with 14, followed by Humphrey with 9, junior Trisha Harrison and sophomore Libbi Hartl scored 8 apiece, senior Vonai Willison had 6, junior Brianna Finney had 4 and senior Tristan Jeffers and junior Teagan Bullock had a bucket each.

In the semifinals the Lady Cubs pulled out a win in the 4th quarter on a 40-foot buzzer beater by Harrison on a play that started with just 2.7 seconds on the clock and the game tied at 36.

"It was an exciting game," said Bushnell. "Tomales is a well-rounded team with a lot of seniors on the roster and they made their free throws.

The Cubs faltered a little in the 2nd and 3rd quarters when the offense wasn’t clicking. "We’ve had more games than practices," said Bushnell, "and we’re not always on the same page out there."

Harrison led the scoring with 15, Humphrey added 13, Kercher had 6, Finney had 3 and freshman Emma Valk had 2 points.

In the championship game South Fork dominated Summerfield Waldorf for a 57-40 win. "It was a tough game," said Bushnell. "They shot a lot of 3’s but in the second half our zone trap caused a lot of turnovers that we took advantage of."

Humphrey led the scoring with 12, Kercher had 11, Harrison had 9, Willison and Finney had 8 each, Bullock had 4, Valk had 3 and Jeffers had two.
