Last week South Fork’s harriers hosted the second Humboldt Del Norte Conference meet of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 27 and sent a contingent to the Stanford Invitational gathering in Palo Alto on Saturday.
Two-time 2012 local meet champion junior Dustyn Salomon took second place at the Miranda event with a time of 17:05, just behind Eureka’s Liam Morris who won the race. Salomon’s time was nearly 50 seconds faster than his time last year on the home course.
Senior Ismael Lopez was the next South Fork finisher in 5th place with a time of 18:08. Senior David Chadbourne placed 8th at 18:32. Junior Jesus Lopez placed 10th at 19:11. Senior Damian Alatorre placed 31st with a time of 22:52 and newcomer senior Devin Hand placed 32nd at 22:54. There were 46 boys at the meet. South Fork put an impressive 4 athletes in the top ten finishers.
Among the 27 girls in the race, South Fork senior Tristan Jeffers had the best time of 27:09 for 13th place. Senior Tara Gallagher placed 17th at 28:00 and junior Miriam Duron came in 23rd at 30:32. Each of the girls improved her previous course best by over a minute.

On Saturday the three girls and the boys who were not in McKinleyville representing South Fork on the soccer field traveled to Stanford where they got a look at some of the competition likely to be encountered in the post season.
With 126 Division 5 girls in the race South Fork’s Jeffers placed the highest at 115th with a time of 27:42. Gallagher was next at 120th at 28:48 and Duron was 123rd at 30:51.
Of the 152 Division 5 boys running Ismael Lopez did the best for South Fork with a time of 18:37 in 52nd place. Chadbourne placed 72nd at 19:02, and Hand, running in pain with a cramp placed 145th with a time of 23:29.
Impressive first place times of 15:05 for the boys (Arcadia High) and 16:51 for the girls (Glacier Peak High) give the Cubs some motivation for improvement. The non-technical course was on the Stanford Golf Course and was mostly flat and easy going.
Today the Cubs will run in the 3rd league meet at Arcata in Redwood Park and on Saturday they will run in the Clam Beach Invitational just north of McKinleyville.
