South Fork High School junior Dustyn Salomon took 1st place in the Humboldt Del Norte Conference’s opening cross country meet last Tuesday in Fortuna with a time of 17:51, 17 seconds faster than the 2nd-place runner from Arcata. South Fork took 4th place overall in the team standings for the event behind Arcata, McKinleyville and Eureka.

Salomon’s strong second win of the season came with a full slate of competition as all HDN schools were represented on the three-mile Fortuna course. Senior Ismael Lopez came in 19th with a time of 18:58. Senior David Chadbourne was 13th at 18:59, six seconds faster than his time last year on the same course. Junior Jesus Lopez was 17th at 19:38, 32 seconds faster than last year. Senior Damian Alatorre finished 46th with a time of 23:13.

Three girls represented South Fork on the course, all running in their first league meets of their careers. Senior Tristan Jeffers came in 23rd with a time of 29:16. She was followed by senior Tara Gallagher who ran a time of 29:18 for 24th place. Junior Miriam Duron placed 34th with a time of 34:13.

South Fork hosts the next league meet today at 4 p.m.
