South Fork High School’s track and field team for 2010 opens the season this coming Saturday at the Northern Humboldt Relays in McKinleyville. Twenty-one students are participating in the various events this Spring, coached by a team of Rio Anderson, Susan Chadbourne, Lonnie Whitlow, and D.J. Miclette.

Returning sprinters include seniors Gwen and Claire Shaskan. Claire will be running the 800 meter and 1600-meter races as well as being part of the 4x400 relay team. Gwen is on the relay team as well and will also run in the 800-meter events. Senior Taylor Neill will be running in the 4x100 meter races and the 300 hurdles again. Neill is also an experienced pole vaulter. Senior Logan Boyd will throw the discus and the shot and will also sprint in the 100-meter dashes.

Another returning senior, Kyle O’Rourke, will do lots of running, participating in the 4x400 relays, the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races.

Junior Michael Corder will be involved in three field events: the discus, shot, and long jump. Other juniors on the team include Lucas Sack, a sprinter in the 100, 200, and 400 meter runs, Gabe Miclette, who will be a pole vaulter, long jumper, and sprinter in the 400 meter and 4x400 meter races, Camelia Gallagher, running the 200, 400, and 800 meter races and the 4x100 relays, and Amanda Harrison, also a 4x100 racer who will long jump and pole vault.

There are three sophomores on the squad this year. Anastasia Deloury will dash in the 100 meter and 4x100 races. Lindsay Locke will be busy, performing in the Triple Jump as well as racing in the 4x100 relays and the 800 and 1600 meter runs. Weston Field will throw both the discus and the shot.

Freshman Bobby Scully will be an 800-meter runner and possibly participate in relays. Dahlia Cheramy will be throwing both the discus and shot while another freshman, Elizabeth Kubik, will throw the discus. David Chadbourne will long jump and also run in the 800 and 1600 meter races, the 4x400 relays, and the hurdles. Megan Albee will triple jump, long jump, and run 1600 meters and the 4x400 relays. Melissa Surber will dash in the 100 and 200-meter events and also be a pole vaulter. Terrance Fields will sprint in the 100, 200, and 400-meter races and possibly in the relays, and Willow Shiningstar is expected to help in the 4x100 relays as well as the 100, 200, and 400 meter runs.

Next on the schedule after McKinleyville will be an all schools meet at Del Norte March 24.
