Leggett Valley plays in NCL II North, a league that consists of eight teams from Covelo in the east to Point Arena in the south. Their league record was 5 wins and 9 losses, and of the 9 losses, Leggett was very competitive in all but three games -- several being decided in the last two minutes of the contests. Pretty remarkable, for such a small team.
Their season ended with one of the most amazing games in the school’s history. In a hard fought battle at home against Potter Valley, the Leggett boys held a one point lead at the end of the first quarter, 15 to 14. The second quarter was played evenly, with both teams scoring 14. Leggett took a one point lead at the break, but four of the six Leggett players were in foul trouble. At the end of three, Potter Valley out-scored Leggett 13 to 11 to take a 41-40 lead into the fourth quarter. Leggett lost its first forward with 6:04 left in the quarter when Mike Marino fouled out. Now playing with five, Potter Valley took a three point lead. For the next several minutes, the teams traded baskets. Then with 3:43 remaining, Colby Kelley, hit a long three to tie the game. Leggett managed to build a three point lead before Chris Kobza fouled out with 2:16 left in the quarter. The teams were then playing four on five. Both teams scored on their next possession to bring the score to 55-53, Leggett. With Leggett trying to run the clock out, Kelley was fouled-making one of two. On Potter’s next possession, with 24 seconds to go, Brian Braham committed his 5th foul, the basket counted and put them on the line for a chance to tie -- the score, 56-55. A time out was called and Potter missed the free throw, but Leggett was now down to three players. Kelley rebounded the missed shot and headed up the court. Potter forced a turnover and drew a foul on Garrett Rhoten, his fifth. Sixteen seconds remained in the game and Leggett was left with two players to finish the game. Potter was back on the line with another chance to win. They missed their free throws and Kelley got the rebound and dribbled up the court with three defenders trying to take the ball. A time out was called with 11 seconds to go. Now Leggett had to inbound the ball with only two players. Cody Centeno inbounded the ball successfully and Kelley dribbled until he was fouled -- making one of two from the line, for a 57-55 lead. Potter called a time out 9.6 seconds to go. Leggett put Centeno on the ball and Kelley under the basket. Potter inbounded and passed up the court over Centeno to the right wing, where the player drove to the basket and had their shot blocked off the backboard by Kelley. Potter got the rebound and took another shot and the ball was blocked and grabbed by Kelley to win the game for Leggett. It was an outstanding way to end the season.
