Emphasizing the positive, I want to pass along information about the recent and ongoing success of a college coach. Keri Carollo (Rocha) grew up in Miranda and played basketball at South Fork High and then four years (1993-96) at Humboldt State. The last time I checked, her name is still in the Lady Jacks’ record book, for the No. 2 spot for career 3-pointers and in the top 10 for 3-pointers in a season.
Carollo is having another great year as head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s basketball team. Carollo, in her eighth season as head coach, guided the Warhawks (20-7) to this season’s Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAC) league title, as they hosted a NCAA Division III game last week against St. Thomas (Minn.).
Two years ago, Carollo’s Warhawks took third in the NCAA D-III Final Four and finished with a 29-4 record. The 29 wins, and the 23 wins by her team in 2008-09, represent the No. 1 and No. 4 highest totals in UW-W’s 44-year program history. Carollo was selected as the D-III Coach of the Year by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. She and husband, assistant coach Joe Carollo, are expecting their third child in April.
