The South Fork High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team lost its two road games last week. Hoopa’s jayvees prevailed on Tuesday by a score of 67-35 in what coach Jenny Early described as a lackluster performance. Kendra Courtemanche-Jones led Cub scorers with 14 points. Tristan Jeffers contributed 6 points and good low post defense while Vonai Willison and Kaitlyn Teasley each added seven points to the South Fork total. Elizabeth Kubik had the other point for the Cubs.

Despite losing, 31-23, at St. Bernard’s Thursday, Early was happy with many of the things that the jayvees accomplished. Courtemanche-Jones again led the way with 9 points but the coach was glad to see more outside shooting from South Fork and more sharing of the offensive load. Additionally, the defense in the second half, after St. Bernard’s breezed to a 22-8 lead in the first half was, in Early’s terms, “...the best we have played yet.” Also, she felt that the rebounding and ball pursuit improved considerably from past performances. Krissy Rotbergs, Paige Paup, and Kubik are making good strides at the post positions and, “...they are getting more aggressive on defense and starting to get more involved offensively.”

Jeffers and Paup each scored 4 points for the Cubs, while Willison and Teasley chipped in with 3 apiece. This week the girls are at home, with Ferndale visiting on Tuesday and Fortuna coming down on Thursday. Willits comes to Miranda Saturday, with boys and girls varsity and JV games running from noon (jayvee girls) until the varsity boys at 4:30.
