FERNDALE - Both the varsity and junior varsity boy’s basketball teams played in the Ferndale Tournament last Friday and Saturday. On Friday night the JV boy’s played the host team Ferndale. The Cub’s got off to a pretty good start after Hokeem Sadon hit a 15-foot jump shot then hit a 3 pointer for a quick five points. However, Ferndale quickly clamped down on the defense end resulting in Cub turnovers and quick baskets for the Wildcats. The Cub’s had a hard time matching-up with Ferndale’s size and muscle. Ferndale ended up beating the Cub’s 55-10.
The varsity boy’s played a scrappy Round Valley on Friday night. The Cub’s played pretty well, beating Round Valley 55-44. The Cub’s had balanced scoring and were once again led by Bryan Arbuthnot who scored 14 points and had 7 rebounds.
On Saturday the varsity boy’s played Ferndale, who just won the Trinity Tournament over in Weaverville. Ferndale has a big team and without junior center Jared Storre, the Cubs had a tough time matching their size. Ferndale had a number of offensive rebounds leading to easy baskets. In addition, the Cubs turned the ball over too often early in the game and did not shoot very well. Ferndale beat the Cubs 50-33. Bryan Arbuthnot had 13 and 4 rebounds.
The JV boy’s played Fortuna on Saturday morning, losing to the Huskies 42-36. The Cub’s were up 8-2 after the first quarter, but a number of turnovers in the second quarter allowed the Huskies to take a 16-13 lead going into halftime. The Cub’s were down 30-20 after three quarters. However, the Cub’s played hard in the fourth quarter, but ultimately ran out of time. The Cub’s were led by freshman Forrest Mitchell who finished with 11 points and 5 rebounds.
The JV boy’s played St. Bernard’s in their final game and beat the Crusader’s 37-26. The Cub’s played well, minimizing turnovers and crashing the boards. Freshman David Beebe had a good game scoring 15 points and getting 6 steals leading to some easy lay-ups. Levi Paine did a good job on the defensive end and finished with 8 rebounds.
Both boys’ teams travel to Arcata on January 8, 2010 to play the tough Tigers.
