As Atteberry negotiated a right curve in the roadway while merging onto Lowry Road, he lost control of his vehicle and the truck and trailer combination drove off the west roadway edge.
The truck and trailer combination overturned multiple times as they rolled down an embankment, causing the trailer to lose its load of logs. The truck and trailer eventually came to rest toward the bottom of the embankment with Atteberry and his passenger, Jonathan Russell Beck, age 20, of Arcata, still inside the truck cab.
Atteberry exited the vehicle and climbed up to the roadway where he was eventually able to call 9-1-1. Beck remained in the vehicle and was eventually extricated by emergency personnel. Atteberry sustained minor injuries and Beck sustained major non-life threatening injuries. Both occupants were transported by air ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka. Neither Atteberry nor Beck were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident and DUI is not believed to be a factor.
The California Highway Patrol would like to thank Cal Fire, Cal Star, and area volunteer fire departments for their prompt response and assistance with processing the collision scene and providing patient transport.
