Bulldozer operators, water tenders, crew bus drivers, vehicle drivers and mechanics who have a Cal Fire/USFS agreement or contract requiring annual safety training will need to take this mandatory class or they will not be eligible for contracts for the entire 2013 fire season. This class will offer hired vendors a better understanding of fire safety and give them the knowledge to stay safe while fighting fires during the 2013 fire season.
Last year several hundred local hired vendors participated in the mandatory fire safety classes. With the current economy, CR expects more people will consider seeking a fire season contract this year. Equipment vendors are encouraged to register early in order to secure a confirmed seat in the class. Enrollment in each class is limited so that each participant will have time to practice learning how to set up a fire safety shelter in the classroom. The fire safety shelter is a portable shelter designed to save lives when the fire fighter cannot escape a rapidly approaching fire.
Classes will be offered in Crescent City, Eureka, Fort Bragg, Mad River and Willow Creek. Classes begin in January and will be held through April. The one-day course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with sign-in beginning at 8 a.m. For a detailed list of class locations and dates see the CR Community Education website.
Enrollment in each fire marshal-approved class is limited to forty students. The early registration fee for Crescent City, Eureka, Fort Bragg and Mad River is $55. Early registration guarantees a confirmed seat. Late registration, starting three days prior to the start of the class, is $65. Late registration will be accepted only if space is available. Lunch will be provided for the Willow Creek location with an early registration fee of $69 and a late registration fee of $79. Walk-in registration will be accepted only if space is available. These mandatory classes fill up quickly, so early registration is strongly recommended in order to attend a preferred date and location.
