An air tanker drops one of the loads of fire retardant on Benbow Hill last Sunday afternoon in efforts to extinguish a fire possibly started when someone tossed a cigarette out a car window. The fire quickly accelerated up the hill and over the top and burned around seven acres before it was extinguished.

A helicopter with a basket full of water prepares to make a drop on the fire. The river was extremely low this time of year making it a challenge for the pilot.
3. Members of the Eel River Conservation Camp crew get ready to hike up the hill to make a fire break around the areas already burned to keep it from igniting and starting up again. Also responding to the fire was Garberville Volunteer Fire Department, Redway Volunteer Fire Department, Cal Fire and Fruitland Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.
