On Monday, Sept. 14, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office received a call from the camp host at Moonstone Beach around 6 p.m. reporting that an explosive device had been found. A Humboldt County bomb squad deputy responded to the call.

The camp host told the deputy the device was found by a citizen at the south end of the parking lot in some bushes. The deputy retrieved the device and recognized it as a Model 450 Flash Bang Device, which is typically used by law enforcement or military personnel.

These devices produce a stunning, disorienting blast and a brilliant, dazzling flash. They are designed with a short, nominally one-second-delay fuse and can cause serious injuries if used inappropriately. They are illegal to possess. If you find one, do not touch it, and call local law enforcement immediately.

The deputy took the device for proper disposal.

Anyone with information for the Sheriff’s office regarding this case or related criminal activity is encouraged to call the Sheriff’s office at 445-7251 or the Sheriff’s office crime tip line at 268-2539.
