A fire broke out on Sequoia Road in Fruitland Ridge at around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday and burned approximately 1.5 acres. The fire apparently was started when someone was mowing in dry grass. First on the scene was the Fruitland Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. It should be noted that the recent election to form a fire protection district in Fruitland Ridge failed to pass by a very narrow margin last week, which could result in a much slower response in the future if there is no volunteer fire department in the area. Also responding were two water tenders, a helicopter, air support, one hand crew, and three Cal Fire engines that included volunteers from Fortuna and Rio Dell who are on loan to provide extra coverage for Cal Fire. Cal Fire Battalion Chief Marty Hobbs said mowing your dry grass is probably not the best idea this time of year and extra precautions need to be taken when working in tinder-dry vegetation.
