Font ResizePublic comment was sought regarding tentative recommendations by the local Community Advisory Committee (CAC) on suitable land use for the Garberville, Benbow, Alderpoint, Redway and Ruby Valley areas.
Planner Tom Hofweber said that meetings would be held at Redway School on Aug. 7 at 7 p.m. to take comments on current proposals for Alderpoint, Redway and Ruby Valley. The Garberville and Benbow proposals would be addressed on Aug. 14 at the school district office in Garberville.
The CAC was comprised of a dozen local residents who were assisting county planners in developing a general plan for this end of the county.

Second District supervisor Harry Pritchard joined fifth district supervisor Anna Sparks in supporting offshore oil drilling off the Humboldt Coast. In a proposal supported by North Coast assemblyman Doug Bosco, 155 tracts off the Northern California coastline will be opened for oil leasing. Ninety-nine of the tracts are off the Humboldt coast.
Pritchard told the Record that drilling would be several years away and would be done in federal waters. Concerns had already been expressed by commercial fishermen and when asked what he thought of that, Pritchard said that the fishermen would get a chance to express their opposition in public hearings that would be held before the drilling started. He added that he thought a lot of them would change their attitude, saying that “more are in favor of now than in the past.”

Miranda 4-H went to Redwood Acres Fair and came away with a number of awards. Mike Pogue showed his 1183-pound steer, Conrad, and took eighth place in showmanship. His steer got a Group 1 ribbon and placed third in his class. Aaron Vandenack took a first in showmanship with his Gilt named Wanda and competed in the round robin. Wanda got a Group 1 ribbon and was ninth in the sale. James Pogue got an eighth place ribbon in the pig obstacle course with his feeder hog Blackie. Debbie Lake showed her pure-bred Lamancha goats and in the junior doe division, she won reserve grand champion and took a third and fourth place award. Shanna Porter got a first place in senior doe rabbits and a third place in showmanship. She also won two first places in callligraphy and two first places in entomology.

The State Department of Social Services launched a three-year demonstration project in Santa Cruz County that could have paved the way for major reform of In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS). The project would provide the first detailed study into the relative merits and cost-effectiveness of delivering in-home services through county contracts with private agencies or through individual providers hired directly by the recipient. The project included a temporary waiver of per-case payments ceilings to allow individual providers to compete freely in the marketplace. It was hoped the experiment would produce data to allow better comparisons of the most cost efficient delivery of in-home services.

Carl Chavez, superintendent of the Eel River District of the State Park System, had been named “Superintendent of the Year” by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Chavez, who managed nine state park units south of Eureka, was awarded the honor for his success in consolidating two former areas into a single district and for bringing two visitor centers into operation.
