A small grass fire reported around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 23 and was quickly extinguished thanks to quick response from firefighters. The fire began down an embankment and went into a ravine on the southbound off ramp of Hwy. 101 at Sprowel Creek Road. Agencies responding included the Garberville Volunteer Fire Department, Cal Fire, and Eel River Conservation crews. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Homes on Sunnybank Lane were the closest structures to the fire, but due to the quick response by fire crews they were not in danger.
