CAMP (Campaign Against Marijuana Planting) was in its second week of raiding gardens in Southern Humboldt and Northern Mendocino, scoring 1,327 plants, bringing their seasonal total to 6,407 plants pulled. CAMP spokesperson Dan Roach estimated the street value of the marijuana at $13 million. Two arrests were made but the names of those arrested were not released.
CAMP set up its command center at the minimum security prison at Dean Creek where they burned about 45,000 pounds of “Thai sticks.” The potent Thai marijuana was seized in San Francisco on April 9 by the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Custom Bureau from the Oregon Beaver, a fishing vessel. Two semi-truck trailers brought the contraband to the command center to be destroyed under tight security. It was the largest seizure of marijuana to date and resulted in six arrests and the discovery of what agents said was a major smuggling ring.

The Board of Trustees of the Southern Humboldt Unified School District heard from poet Dan Brewer at their regular meeting. Brewer had been working in the district since the previous January under a program called California Poets in the Schools. Brewer told the board members he had students write about a number of things they experienced in their lives, such as loneliness, teenage suicide, math, love and poetry. He also read from three poetry anthologies written by his students and just published by the Humboldt County Office of Education.
A board member asked Brewer how the board could help the program. Brewer asked for a commitment of $2,000 from the district and said he was prepared to raise another $2,000 from the service organizations. The board made no commitment but Superintendent Roger Adams said he thought they could find some money for the program.

Tom Hofweber, the county planner overseeing the local CAC, said the first meeting would be held at Redway Elementary School and the second meeting at the School District office in Garberville.
The CAC was comprised of a dozen local residents to assist planners in developing a general plan for the area.

The State Department of Social Services had launched a three-year program that could lead to major reform of the In-Home Supportive Services for aged, blind and the disabled. The program was to study the cost effectiveness of delivering in-home services to allow people to stay in their own homes and avoid institutionalization. Part of the study included a waiver of per-case payment ceilings, which were thought to discourage more efficient contract service procedures. Removing the ceiling was expected to allow providers of service to compete freely in the “service delivery market.”
