On Tuesday, September 29, a fire located at a homeless encampment on Redwood Drive near the intersection with Alderpoint Road consumed about one acre of grass and brush. Cal Fire and the Garberville and Redway Fire Departments responded quickly. The cause of that fire is under investigation.
On Thursday, October 1, a roadside fire erupted on the river side of U.S. 101 near Sylvandale. Cal Fire and the Phillipsville Volunteers responded and quickly extinguished the blaze. About one-quarter acre of grass was consumed.
Later that day, a fire was reported on French Camp Road in the Ettersburg area. Cal Fire responded to that blaze with nine engines, four hand crews, two dozers, four air tankers, one air attack plane and two helicopters. The fire was contained at 40 acres of grass and timber. Mop-up operations were continuing on Friday morning. Cal Fire was assisted by the volunteers of Telegraph Ridge, Briceland, Honeydew and Garberville.
