National Immunization Awareness Month is a reminder that we all need vaccines throughout our lives.
Back-to-school season is here, and it's time for parents to gather supplies and backpacks. It's also the perfect time to make sure your kids are up to date on their vaccines.
To celebrate the importance of immunizations throughout life – and make sure children are protected with all the vaccines they need – Redwood's Rural Health Center is joining with partners nationwide in recognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month.
Most schools and childcare programs require children to be current on vaccinations before enrolling to protect the health of all students.
If your child needs immunizations, well child check-ups, or physicals, stop by Redwood's Rural Health Center's monthly Kid's Day event on Tuesday, Sept. 2 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Medical Building. This FREE Kid's Day event will focus on ensuring that children have the opportunity to receive immunizations necessary to enter childcare, pre-schools, and/or kindergarten. All VFC-eligible children can receive immunizations for no out of pocket cost. In addition, there are various immunizations available for children who don't qualify for the VFC program. For those who opt not to have their child immunized, RRHC providers can complete the 'Personal Beliefs Exemption to Required Immunization'.
When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk and can spread diseases to others in their classrooms and community – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated, and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.
In addition to the immunizations required for Kindergarten aged children, there are recommended vaccines that preteens should receive as well. You can use any health care visit, including sports physicals or some sick visits, to get the shots your kids need.
Parents can find out more about the recommended immunization schedule at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/parents/index.html or by calling RRHC at 707-923-2783.
