The monthly government food commodities provided by Food for People in Eureka and distributed by volunteers at the Food Pantry located on Locust at the Garberville Community Presbyterian Church will be available on Wednesday, April 16 from 2 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, April 17 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. If your income falls within the government income guidelines, you are eligible. The commodities for this month are spaghetti, tomato sauce, beef stew, vegetarian beans, carrots, peaches, mashed potatoes, breads and various fruit and vegetables.

Individuals are asked to self-certify that they are eligible by signing in. Please bring identification with your local address. If you are picking up for a homebound person, you must have a consent form each month from them with their name, address, the number in their family, income and authorization.

Individuals or families are asked to try to come only once a month so that as many households as possible are served but if you need food, please come. A household may receive commodities only one time per month but there is some emergency food donated by local residents and merchants.

The Letter Carriers Food Drive was very successful. Many thanks to all who donated and to the letter carriers for collecting it. They received almost 1,000 pounds of food to help replenish the supplies and improve the variety of foods they can offer. They also want to thank all of the local grocery stores: Ray’s, Shop Smart and Chautauqua for the regular weekly donations that they make. And a special thank you to Electra for picking up and delivering those donations each week. She is a super “behind-the-scenes” volunteer.

The Food Pantry is usually open every Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 a.m. to noon, and Wednesdays 2 to 4 p.m. Volunteers are needed for backup on all three days. Anyone wishing to donate food for the Food Pantry program or who has an idea of how to improve the distribution program should talk to the volunteers.

They welcome any produce in good condition from your home garden and can arrange for gleaners to help pick your fruit trees so the food does not go to waste. For more information, please call Patti at 223-2430.
