15 children rescued from schooner that ran aground

MYSTIC, Conn. (AP) The Coast Guard has rescued 15 children among other passengers from a schooner that ran aground off Connecticut.

The 126-foot schooner Alabama had 15 children, two adult chaperones and five crew members aboard when it ran aground near the mouth of the Mystic River on Sunday evening.

A New London-based Coast Guard crew transferred the passengers to the Noank Shipyard in Groton. No injuries were reported.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Investigators will examine the vessel to make sure it's safe before it operates again.

The Alabama's home port is Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts. Built in 1926, it now offers recreational cruises and is operated by Black Dog Tall Ships.
