On Saturday, June 28, Democracy Unlimited of Humboldt County (DUHC) will host its next full-day introductory workshop “Challenging Corporate Power, Creating Democracy.” This all day workshop will run from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and will be held in Eureka. The workshop will be led by David Cobb and Kaitlin Sopoci-Belkap, staff members at Democracy Unlimited.
The workshop retraces the history of corporate power in the United States in order to discuss how corporations have assumed their current role in society. “Corporations have become the dominant institution of our time, growing stronger and more powerful than many governments. The power of large corporations poses a very real threat to local democracy,” said Sopoci-Belknap, Executive Director of Democracy Unlimited.
While some may see looking at the negative effects of the corporation in the US as a bleak topic, Democracy Unlimited sees reason for optimism. “The whole reason we offer these workshops is to empower citizens to assert their democratic rights,” said Sopoci-Belknap.
