Several members of Kiwanis of the Redwoods, Redway, attended Division 20’s annual dinner meeting with the District Governor, Oscar Knight, and his wife, Gladys, of the CA-NEV-HI Kiwanis at the Ingomar Club in Eureka, on April 3.
Oscar Knight held a meeting before the dinner with the presidents and secretaries of each club in the division and learned quite a bit about what each club in Del Norte and Humboldt counties have done for their communities.
The dinner was attended by approximately 120 people, including 13 from the Redway area and guest of the club, John Casali, who received an award from the Kiwanis of the Redwoods, presented to him by Oscar Knight and Lt. Governor Dave Smith, of Eureka. The award was presented to Casali for his outstanding community service with the Eel River Clean-up Project. Knight was impressed by the service John provided at his expense and from donations.
Also, an award was given to Danielle Whitmore of Redway for her outstanding volunteer service to Kiwanis for the past few years, with Toys for Tots, the Redwood Run, and other countless hours provided to the club and community. Danielle was absent from the dinner; fellow member Robin West accepted the award on
Also on April 10, the Kiwanis had a special guest speaker, Pastor Sharon Latour of the Community Presbyterian Church in Garberville. Sharon told the Kiwanians about the new program “Friday Night Youth,” which is a non-religious, community wide outreach to local youth for a safe place to spend Friday evenings. The program will start on April 25 and run from 4 to 10:30 p.m. All high school students are welcome. Pastor Sharon can be contacted for more information at 923-3295.
