This run is on the Six Rivers Running Club’s schedule and entry forms can be downloaded from their website at www.6rrc.com/Waterfront13.pdf. Entry forms are also available at Eureka Natural Foods on 15th and Broadway and The Jogg’N Shoppe on 11th and G Street in Arcata. Early registration deadline is Sept. 13. Runner packets can be picked up the day before the run and registrations are open up until 9:30 a.m. the morning of race day.
The Waterfront Run attracts walkers, families with strollers, serious athletes, and recreational runners from infants to 80+. Last year, Cody Thompson won the five-mile in 27.43 minutes and Laura McNulty won the women’s division in 32.18. The course record still stands at 27.21 when 21-year old Shawn Stephens-Whale from Canada smashed the record by 32 seconds in 2011. Last year 22-year-old Donovan Lackey set a new course record in the two-mile by 18 seconds when he clocked an 11.
Proceeds from the run benefit the Running Shoe Fund administered by Six Rivers Running Club. Last February, over 100 pairs of free running shoes were given to third through 12th grade runners. The Shoe Fund has sparked a running resurgence due, in part, to the eight-year history of local youth being outfitted properly and motivated to get involved in running. It’s not just youth, but the whole family that is putting one foot in front of the other to adopt a more active life-style.
Sponsors are welcomed to partner with Eureka Natural Foods and the following businesses are helping to make the Waterfront Run possible: Soloray, Nature’s Way, Bien Padre, Nature’s Path, Amy & Brian, Runa Tea, Six Rivers Running Club, Cypress Grove, Eel River Organic Beef, Wild Planet, Coast Central Credit Union, NewsChannel 3, KHUM, and KFMI.
The last Sunday in September, the 29th, marks the 9th annual Waterfront Walk and Run; a community wellness event that provides youth running shoes. For more information contact Karen Brooks, race director, at 822-7736.
