Community members with some musical experience may be ready to join the CR concert band or the CR studio/jazz band. Join CR associate faculty Brian Newkirk and the CR concert band to enjoy the study and performance of nineteenth and twentieth-century concert band literature. The class addresses rehearsal techniques, development of sight-reading and public performance skills, and historical background of the concert band repertoire. Under the leadership of CR associate faculty William Allison, the CR studio/jazz band ensemble focuses on modern progressive jazz and jazz-rock fusion. The class addresses the development of sight reading, public performance and improvisation skills.
Both the concert band and the studio/jazz band will present a concert to the community at the end of the semester in the new CR Performing Arts Theater.
CR’s administration worked with its music faculty to create a solution for community members to join the CR for-credit students in the concert band and the studio/jazz band. In order to simultaneously meet CR students’ needs for transfer credit and to serve the North Coast community’s desire for personal enrichment opportunities in music, CR’s music faculty and administration developed an innovative new two-tier enrollment system that involves offering enrollments through both its CE department and as regular college credit classes.
CE students who are not using the classes for transfer or degree completion will be able to participate fully in all of the class activities but will not receive college credit. Students wishing to take these classes in order to receive credit to complete a CR degree or to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program will be able to so. The CE department is offering students the opportunity to buy two CR music classes and get one free. Each class is $149
”This unique, two-tier enrollment system will allow students who have previously taken CR classes a way to continue to participate in CR’s music program,” said CR president Kathy Smith.
”The instructors are hoping to see a blend of new and familiar faces in August,” said CR music professor Ed Macan.
