The North Coast Small Business Development Center is pleased to offer their series of Business Basics workshops in Southern Humboldt. All workshops are free of charge to the attendees. Workshops are targeted for those starting a new business or wanting to improve an existing business.

The workshops will be held every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. from Sept. 18 through Oct. 16. The workshops are held at Redway School, room 7, at 344 Humboldt Avenue in Redway.

Startup Basics workshop will be held on Sept. 18. Areas covered include: licenses and permits; taxes and business banking; employees and contractors - knowing the difference; legal structures of businesses (LLC, sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, nonprofit); good start-up resources - local and online.

Business Plan Basics workshop will be held on Sept. 25. Areas covered include: why every business should write a business plan; contents of a business plan; writing your business plan outline; market research; helpful hints to save time and maximize effectiveness of your plan; do’s and don’ts.

Marketing Basics workshop will be held on Oct. 2. Areas covered include: What is a marketing plan? how to begin thinking like a marketer; basics on target markets; competitive analysis, features and benefits analysis; and market research resources.

Financial Basics workshop will be held on Oct. 9. Areas covered include: pricing your product or service, determining your company’s break-even point; how to create basic financial documents (income statement, balance sheet, tracking cash-flow); business banking basics; importance of sound bookkeeping from the beginning of the venture. A case study will be used.

Books and Records workshop will be held on Oct. 16. Areas covered include: essential skills for sound bookkeeping (manual or computerized) including setting up a chart of accounts, tracking sales, bills, inventory, fixed assets, credit cards, owner’s investments and withdrawals, bank statements, and information for various tax reports.
