The “Rising Moon, Setting Sun” hike will be offered Saturday, Aug. 6. BLM Wilderness Ranger Paul Sever will lead participants on the seven-hour hike up King Peak for spectacular views of sunset and moonrise.
Hikers will climb 1,900 feet up King Peak and cover two and a half miles each way.
Participants will meet at 4 p.m. at the King Range Office in Whitethorn and carpool to the Lightning Trailhead for the hike. Each hiker should bring water, a sack dinner and a headlamp or flashlight for hiking back down the mountain in the darkness.
Geology and cultural history will be featured Saturday, Aug. 13, in a six-hour hike from the Mattole Campground to the Punta Gorda Lighthouse. BLM Geologist Sam Flanagan and Archaeologist Dave Johnson will lead the six-mile beach hike.
Participants should meet at 10 a.m. at the Mattole Campground near Petrolia, and bring lunch and water.
