A guided hike focused on native plants and a lecture on habitat gardening are the next events in an ongoing series of winter hikes and lectures offered by the Bureau of Land Management’s King Range National Conservation Area. The hike is Saturday, Feb. 13; the lecture is Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Both events are fee. Reservations can be made by contacting the King Range Office, (707) 986-5411.

The hike is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning at the Nadelos Campground on Chemise Mountain Road. Hikers should be prepared for a route that gains 800 feet in the first mile and a half. They should wear sturdy hiking boots, bring food and water and be prepared for coastal weather.

Cheryl Lisin, a landscape designer with a passion for native plants, will lead the walk, explaining the forest and chaparral plants on Chemise Mountain and the riparian (streamside) plants along Bear Creek.

The lecture will be presented by Pete and Judy Haggard at 7 p.m. at the King Range Office, 768 Shelter Cove Road, Whitethorn. They will discuss landscaping with native plants to attract insects and wildlife.

The speakers are authors of “Insects of the Pacific Northwest” and have many years of gardening experience.
