On Monday, Feb. 4. at approximately 1 a.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a stabbing that occurred at a motel in the 700 block of Redwood Drive in Garberville. A deputy and California Highway Patrol officers (CHP) responded to the scene, along with medical personnel. When the deputy arrived on scene the CHP officers had detained the stabbing suspect, identified as Paul McCarver, age 40, from Blue Lake, in their patrol car.

The deputy interviewed the stabbing victim who told the deputy he and his friend were in the parking lot of the motel when they were approached by McCarver who asked them for a car jack. They refused to give him one and McCarver became angry. Words were exchanged and McCarver brandished a pair of scissors. The words escalated into a physical fight between McCarver and the victim. During the fight McCarver stabbed the victim in the bicep causing a gash of about a half-inch long.

The investigating deputy interviewed McCarver who told the deputy he stabbed the victim in self defense. McCarver had injuries consistent with being in a physical fight.

McCarver was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and booked into the Humboldt County correctional facility. His bail was set at $50,000. He was treated by medical staff at the correctional facility for his injuries.
