College of the Redwoods and The Job Market are teaming up to help people seeking a new career find information about local employers’ hiring needs, training to help people acquire those skills, and programs to help provide scholarships for the training.
The focus of the event is on trainings that last from two to six months and have local jobs available. There will be a free, career training fair at the Wharfinger Building, at 1 Marina Way in Eureka, on Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon to learn more. Ample free parking is available and fun raffle prizes will be given out throughout the event.
”This is my opportunity to be able to browse around and see a lot of different possible opportunities at once,” says Natasha Shawula, who is planning to attend.
Training information will be available for classes including certified medical assisting, sales and customer service, booking with an emphasis on payroll, first line supervisor, maintenance technician, truck driving, certified phlebotomy technician, real estate agent, and the CR police academy. CR staff and instructors will be available to answer questions for people who are considering learning new skills for a new career. The CR truck driver training semi-truck and trailer will be on-site.
Humboldt County has many organizations that help people re-train for new careers. Several of those, including Humboldt County Employment and Training Division, CalWorks, the California Department of Rehabilitation, and the California Employment Development Department will have staff available to explain their programs and help people understand how they may qualify for a training scholarship.
Local employers are volunteering their time to share the skills they are looking for when they hire new employees. Employers that are planning to attend include Bettendorf Trucking, The Times-Standard, Ming Tree Realty and more.
”This is an amazing opportunity for people to move in a new career direction. All the information they need is available in one place,” said Jessica Adkisson, program coordinator at the Humboldt County Employment and Training Division. People who have been considering changing careers will have the opportunity to explore many different options and potentially to start on the path to a new career.
