The South Fork High School girls’ soccer team tied one and lost one last week, bringing their season record to 2-5-1.

Despite out shooting the Del Norte Warriors 16-9 on Wednesday in Crescent City, the Lady Cubs were lucky to come away with a 1-1 tie. After a scoreless first half that saw the Cubs unable to finish several good scoring opportunities a poorly executed goal kick from South Fork was taken advantage of by the Lady Warriors who alertly poked in a goal about 15 minutes into the second half. South Fork continued to press toward the Del Norte goal without success but finally scored with just five minutes left in the game when junior goalie Kathy Petersen sent a long punt to forward to freshman forward Ashleigh Harrison who dribbled through the Warrior defense to knock in the equalizer.

On Saturday the Cubs lost 5-0 to Humboldt Del Norte Conference leaders and perennial powerhouse Arcata. South Fork played stalwart defense in the first half, anchored by junior Kennedy Burnett and her back line of juniors Jennie Rolf and Sammy Marino, sophomore Zulie Blair and freshman Ella Scott.

Also seemingly everywhere at once was senior co-captain Vonai Willison who made countless clearances to thwart the relentless Arcata attack. When the halftime whistle blew the game was a scoreless tie.

The Cubs began to fatigue in the second half, with only 12 players at their disposal, as Arcata continued to send rested legs into the game throughout the half. Before the final whistle blew the Lady Tigers had converted five times.

This week the Cubs will host Ferndale on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and travel to McKinleyville on Saturday for an 11 a.m. kick off. Ferndale is a must-win situation if the Cubs are to keep their post-season hopes alive.
