Experience jazz under the summer stars. Dine on the spectacular Benbow Inn terrace or enjoy cocktails with friends while jazz artists from all over Northern California present traditional and contemporary jazz. The music is from 6:30 p.m. till 9:30 p.m., and there is a $20 cover charge unless you are a guest at the hotel.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, the Yolanda Nickel Quartet will play. Yolanda, known as the queen of the alto sax, has a tremendous sense of swing. She has had a long career playing with musicians such as Richie Cole and Vernell Anders.

On Friday, Aug. 24, Sam Maez will be back on the bandstand with a quintet, which includes bassist Geoff Daugherty, who is known for his impeccable intonation and driving sense of rhythm, and Fort Bragg drummer Jimmy Gallagher who is a rising player in the Bay Area jazz scene.

Saturday, Aug. 25, the Francis Vanek Sextet will play. Tenor saxophonist Vanek was featured this summer at the Mendocino Music Festival Chamber Jazz Series. He is regarded by many as one of the best players in Northern California.

Closing the Summer Series on Sunday, Aug. 26 is the Steve Smith Quartet with guest vocalist Joani Rose. Smith is mature player with a wonderful sense of harmony and timing. He spent years living and playing in San Diego, where he recorded with the rhythm section of the Yellow Jackets. Rose is blossoming as a jazz vocalist, and brings an ease to her singing style.
