Thanks to the great generosity and patience of this wonderful Southern Humboldt community, the Garberville Town Square Board of Directors has announced a “ribbon-cutting” ceremony to celebrate the Town Square’s opening, on Friday, Nov. 13, at 4 p.m.

After nine years of planning, fundraising, public meetings, design research, and consultation with County officials, the construction fence around the site on Church Street in downtown Garberville is about to come down, providing public access to Phase I of the on-going Town Square project.

”We are proud to present this still-to-be-completed first phase of our vision,” said John Schmidt, president of the board. “And frankly, we’re eager to invite more donations to fund those non-hardscape elements still needed in Phase II to make the Square as lovely and as useful as possible. These include a lawn for the kids’ area, water features, shade trellises, more trees and planters, drinking fountain, bike rack, information kiosk, and lighting.”

Schmidt added, “We are so grateful to all of the workers who actually built this first phase; Don Felt from Felt Mountain Construction and his crew for the concrete work. Warren Carroll from Rudy Gutierrez’s Earth Scapes of Northern California laid the permeable pavers. The inmates at the Eel River Conservation Camp helped with the pavers. John Neill Construction did the foundation and infrastructure work. And Kevin Arnoul installed the electrical system.

”We are deeply beholden to our architects, Kash Boodjeh and Garrett McSorley, for their untiring energy over the years. The local McLean Foundation, Humboldt Area Foundation and Headwaters Fund also gave us crucial assistance early on.”

The public can view the architects’ plans for the entire design, as well as follow the continuing efforts at Town Square fundraising, further construction, and upcoming events on our recently-opened web site: garbervilletownsquare.org.

The personalized, engraved commemorative bricks, to be placed during Phase II construction, are still available for a donation; supporters can call 986-7787 for details.

Join the Board, backed by music from the Garberville Town Band “Brass Menagerie” on Friday the 13th as we take down the fence and celebrate the opening of Phase I of the Garberville Town Square.
