Nine year-old Cameron Varnell touched the hearts of many in the Redway and Garberville community when he was diagnosed with acute Myelogenous Leukemia. He is currently at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Tennessee fighting for his life surrounded by the love and support of his family, who dropped everything in their lives to be there for their son. When a family is in need, there is no place more generous than the communities within Humboldt County. When a child is sick, it seems to touch everyone.
The Benbow Hotel is hosting and co-sponsoring with Garberville Rotary a very special wine tasting fundraiser and all proceeds will go to help Cameron and his family fight cancer. Over a dozen wineries are participating and will pour wine, delicious hors d’oeuvres will be served, and there will be live music, a silent and live auction. “We’re thankful so many businesses and individuals are donating their time and wonderful auction items for this event,” said John Porter, owner and managing partner for the Benbow Hotel. “The outpouring of concern and generosity from the winemakers, food vendors, businesses and individuals donating to help this family is inspiring and we’re pulling out all the stops to make this event one of the best we’ve ever had.” Auction items gathered so far include two separate trips to Las Vegas with dinner, overnight stays and dinners in Napa, Mendocino and Benbow, art, wine, and much more to come.
”Cameron and his family are fighting hard to beat this,” said Delbert Chumley, friend of the Varnells. “The on-going medical treatments are like an emotional roller coaster, and they’re lengthy and costly, but we’re all very hopeful. We hope everyone will come taste some great wine and food and join us for a fun day of celebrating life and for a good cause.”
The event is Saturday, November 7, at the Benbow Hotel in Garberville. Tickets are $25 per person. Wine tasting is 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and the live auction begins with auctioneer, Rex Bohn at 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Guests staying at the hotel receive complimentary tickets.
Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the event and at the following businesses: Benbow Hotel, Benbow Golf Course, Beehive Salon, and Flavors Coffee House in Garberville.
