From the Redwood Record of July 21, 1983

A downed power line had ignited a fire off Alderpoint Road the previous week. The fire burned 32 acres of grass and woodland before being extinguished.

According to John Barbour of CDF, a PG&E line came down for unknown reasons on Alderpoint Road two miles east of Garberville. Firefighters and units from CDF outposts at Garberville, Alderpoint, Thorne and Weott responded to the blaze, along with the CDF air attack contingent from Rohnerville, Ukiah and Kneeland. Volunteer units from Garberville and a water tanker from Phillipsville also responded. Crews from Eel River Conservation Camp at Dean Creek and Humboldt Fire Center at Weott also responded, as did two private bulldozers and a private water tanker.

Investigators from CDF and the District Attorney’s office were looking into reports that a rifle had been pointed at a helicopter crew while it was dipping water out of the Eel River just outside Garberville.

A $1,000 reward was being offered for the recovery of a rescue boat and attachments stolen from a warehouse at Shelter Cove the previous week.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s office said that sometime during the night of the previous Wednesday, persons unknown used a chain saw at the yard gate on Shelter Cove Road and Telegraph Creek Road. They then cut a lock on the door leading into a warehouse there.

Taken was a rescue boat used by the Shelter Cove Rescue Squad, according to squad member Lucky Young. Also taken were two boat engines, a winch, two batteries, a compass and a bilge pump. The loss to the squad was said to be about $3,000. The squad members themselves raised the reward money in hopes of recovering equipment central to their marine rescues.

The official opening of the Seven Parks Natural History Association’s new Visitor Information Center at Richardson Grove State Park had been celebrated the previous week. Congressman Doug Bosco joined local dignitaries at the event.

The seven parks indicated in the name are Richardson Grove, Benbow Lake State Recreation Area, Sinkyone Wilderness State Park, Standish-Hickey State Recreation Area, Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area, Smithe Redwoods State Reserve and Reynolds Wayside Campground. These parks contain some of the largest redwoods in the world, the largest madrone tree and the most primitive roadless area directly on the Pacific coast.

Association president Bill Roddy said that Richardson Grove was chosen for the center because it is directly in the path of every traveler who passed through the area.

The room in which the visitor’s center will be housed is in itself an historic attraction and it will soon contain many displays of animals, local natural history, history of the settlement of the area and displays of local Native artifacts.
