SANTA ROSA -- The South Fork defense held St. Vincent’s to six yards rushing in the first half.

So the Mustangs’ junior quarterback Josh Wheless passed his team down the field, completing 10-of-13 passes in the first half and leading his team to a 28-0 win over the Cubs.

Wheless finished with 13-of-18 for 162 yards.

St. Vincent’s (10-1) victory in the North Coast Section Division V semifinal advanced it to the championship game next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Santa Rosa High School.

The Mustangs, the No. 1 seed, will play the winner of today’s matchup between No. 2 seed St. Elizabeth (7-4) and No. 3 seed Tomales (8-3).

It will be St. Vincent’s third appearance in the final in the last four seasons.

The loss ended South Fork’s (7-5) season. The No. 4 seed Cubs had defeated Anderson Valley, the No. 5 seed, 44-0 last weekend.

Senior running back Nick McCarthy rushed for a 61-yard touchdown and senior defensive back Ryan DeGraca took a fumbled punt in for another score as St. Vincent’s used big plays to break open a game filled with turnovers by both teams.
