Fishy fun at Mad River Steelhead Days

The Mad River Alliance and main partner the Blue Lake Casino and Hotel present a two-week fishing extravaganza in Blue Lake, Mad River Steelhead Days 2014. Steelhead Days will take place along the shores of the Mad River from Jan. 25 through Feb. 8. This two week family fun fishing event encourages the community to get out into the Mad River and hook a hatchery steelhead. Contest categories include First Fish of the Day (each day!), Best Fish Photo, Last Fish In, and many more daily winners. One automatically qualifies to win prizes with registration. Proceeds benefit the education and citizen monitoring programs of Mad River Alliance.

Saturday, Jan. 25 is a family oriented Kick-off Day at the Blue Lake Business Park presented in partnership with Dell’Arte International and the Mad River Industrial Art Park, funded by ArtPlace America.

In the Dell’Arte studios at the Blue Lake Business Park on 101 Taylor Way from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Dell’Arte and the Mad River Alliance present free workshops for families who want to learn how to fish, led by local experts. Other activities include local artist and organization booths, arts and crafts, entertainment, games, and face painting. Registration for Steelhead Days will also be available. Across the parking lot at the Mad River Brewery, Big Brothers Big Sisters present their Great Chili Cook-Off, so Blue Lake will be bubbling with food, music, fishing, and fantastic fun for the whole family.

At 7 p.m at the Carlo Theatre, Dell’Arte presents Fish Tales, a family friendly variety show featuring local string band Kingfoot, and all things fishy. Expect original music, mayhem, Dell’Arte zaniness and local storytellers Jeff Demark, Thomas Dunklin, and Kit Mann. Tickets are pay-what-you-can, and free with Steelhead Days registration. But space is limited, so reservations are highly recommended. Steelhead Days registration does not guarantee a seat. Registration for Steelhead Days is $35 for adults, $25 for ages 12 to 18 and free for kids up to 12 years of age. A Steelhead Days registration includes: membership to Mad River Alliance ($35 value), entrance to all shows and workshops ($30 value), chances to win prizes daily, entry to the Awards Dinner at the Blue Lake Casino ($25 value), and $10 in Blue Bucks to be used at Blue Lake Casino.

That is a $100 value for just $35 bucks and a great excuse to go fishing. Catches can be verified at Mad River Tackle in Arcata or Redwood Marine in Eureka.

Some of the top prizes include a guided drift boat trip with Kenny Priest of North Coast Fishing ($400 value), a guided fishing trip with Gary Blasi of Full Throttle Sportfishing ($350 value), a THULE cargo box valued at $500, and fishing gear, rods, reels and much more.

The Awards Celebration Dinner takes place on Saturday, Feb. 8 in the Blue Lake Casino’s Sapphire Palace from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening’s festivities. The opening ceremony will be conducted by local Wiyot tribal leader Cheryl Seidner and features keynote speaker Mitch Farro, North Coast Fisheries restoration expert. After desert, the fun continues with music by local funk/soul band The Hip Joint, and more chances to win amazing prizes.
